How To Archive A Team In Microsoft Teams

Do you have a team that’s no longer active on Microsoft Teams? Do you want to remove the team from everyone’s active list while keeping its contents in case you need them in the future? If thats’ the case, you can archive the team and hide them from your active channels list. Follow our step-by-step guide below to learn how.

Tutorial

In Microsoft Teams, users can create teams with other organization members to work on different tasks and projects for their company. Each team can have its own channels where people can share messages, files, and other useful information.

As time passes, there might be teams that you no longer use in your organization. As the owner, you have the option to delete or archive inactive teams to remove them from the Teams tab.

If you think that you’ll need the team’s contents in the future, you can archive it to hide it from other users. If it comes the time that you need to check the data, you can restore or check it on the Manage teams page.

Here’s our guide about archiving teams on Microsoft Teams.

How to archive one of your teams in MS Teams

If you own a team that you no longer need in Microsoft Teams, you have the option to archive it instead of deleting it. In this way, you can keep it hidden in your organization in case you need references in the future.

You can archive teams from the Microsoft Teams web or desktop app. Check our quick tutorial below, and we’ll guide you every step of the way.

On your computer:

  1. Open the Teams desktop or web app and sign in to your account.
  2. Click “Teams” on the left side of your screen.

  3. Click the gear icon at the bottom of the teams and channels list to manage your teams.

  4. Browse the Active section, click More options (three dots icon) on the right of the channel that you want to manage, and select the “Archive team” option from the menu.

  5. Click the Archive button on the pop-up window to confirm your decision.

That’s how you archive one of your teams on the Teams web and desktop app. You can find all your archived teams by opening the “Manage teams” page and expanding the Archived section.

If you want to recover a team, head to the Archived section, click More options on one of the channels, and select the “Recover team” option from the menu.

Unfortunately, you can’t archive teams from the Microsoft Teams mobile app. You’ll need to open and manage your teams from the web and desktop app to do so.

To wrap it all up

Now that you know how to archive teams on MS Teams, you can hide the ones you don’t need in your organization without deleting their contents. If you ever change your mind, you can always recover archived teams to restore them to your organization.
