Do you want to play your games on Steam alone with some peace and quiet? Or do you don’t want anyone to know that you’re online on the platform? Either way, we’re here to offer our help. In our guide below, we’ll show you how to appear offline on your Steam account.
Steam is one of the best gaming platforms that offer a ton of digital games that you can buy or play for free. With its extensive library of old and new games, it isn’t surprising that many people consider Steam as their best friend.
Aside from offering a huge catalog of titles, Steam also has a social feature that allows its users to add friends on the platform. It allows gamers to play games with other users or message them directly.
However, there are times where you might want to play alone or go offline when you want to play your favorite games on the app. Thankfully, Steam allows you to appear offline to your friends without losing any access to the other features on the platform.
With that in mind, here’s our quick guide on how to sign out of the Friends & Chat feature and go offline on Steam.
How to appear offline from your friends on Steam
If you want to play your games on Steam without any judgment from your friends on the app, you can choose to go offline. In this way, you can enjoy playing any game in your library in peace.
You can immediately appear offline from your friends on Steam as soon as you sign in to their app. Follow our tutorial below, and we’ll show you how to do it on your computer.
- Launch Steam on your desktop and sign in to your account.
- Click Friends on the top left side of your screen.
- Once the menu appears, select “Offline.”
Alternatively, you can open your Friends List window, click the drop-down arrow beside your profile name, and select Offline on the menu. This option logs you out of the Friends & Chat feature on Steam.
When you go and appear offline on Steam, you can still play any of the games on your library, including multiplayer ones. You can also use the other features on the app, such as the Store and Community tab, without any problems.
How to appear offline as soon as your Steam client starts
By default, you sign to the Friends & Chat feature on Steam when you launch their client. However, you can toggle this option to appear offline to your friends without changing your settings every time you sign in to your account.
You can turn off signing in automatically to your Friends & Chat feature by managing your Friends List Settings. Follow our step-by-step tutorial below to learn how.
- After signing in to your Steam client, open your Friends List.
- Click the gear icon to manage your Friends List Settings.
- Turn off “Sign in to friends when Steam Client starts.”
The next time you open your Steam client, you’ll immediately appear offline from your friends. In this way, you can choose when you want to sign in to your Friends List on the app.
To go back online, click Friends on the top left side of the Steam client and select “View Friends List.” Once the Friends window appears on your screen, click “Sign in.”
