How To Appear Offline On Slack
Last Updated: August 18, 2021
Do you want to browse your channels in Slack while appearing offline? Or do you want to stop other workspace members from bothering you in the meantime? In any case, you have the option to set your availability to away, making it appear as if you’re currently offline on the app. With that in mind, here’s a quick guide on how to do so on the Slack mobile, desktop, and web app.
Slack gives your team a platform and a shared space where you can discuss projects, plans, and other stuff online. It allows you and your workspace members to work together without leaving someone out of place.
With the dot feature beside your name on Slack, other workspace members can tell if you’re currently online and active on the app. As such, they’ll know whether you’ll respond immediately to their messages or not.
However, there might be times when you want to work without quietly without any obligation to respond to messages you receive on the app as soon as possible. Thankfully, Slack allows you to set your availability to “Away,” making it appear as if you’re currently offline on the app.
With that in mind, here’s our quick guide on how to change your availability to “Away” on Slack.
How to manage your availability on Slack
By default, Slack determines your availability automatically, depending on your activity on the app. If the app is open on your device, you become “Active” in the eyes of other workspace members. On the other hand, your availability automatically becomes “Away” after some time of inactivity or when you close the app on your phone.
However, you can manually change your availability and set it to either active or away any time you want. In our step-by-step tutorials below, we’ll show you how to do it on your computer or mobile device.
On your computer:
- Launch Slack on your desktop or visit their web browser client, sign in to your account, and open one of your workspaces.
- Click your profile icon on the top right corner of the screen.
- On the menu that appears, click “Set yourself as away.”
If you ever change your mind, all you have to do is click your profile icon once again and select “Set yourself as active” on the menu. When you do change your online availability back to default, Slack automatically sets it as away when you close the app or go inactive for some time.
On your mobile device:
- Launch the Slack mobile app from your home screen or app drawer and sign in to your account.
- Tap “You” at the bottom right corner of the app.
- Tap “Set yourself as away.”
After setting your availability to away, you can go ahead and browse your workspace channels without worrying about other users knowing that you’re currently active on the app. If you ever need to go online, leave the channel, go to the “You” section, and tap “Set yourself as active.”
Please note that setting yourself as away doesn’t disable notifications from Slack. In this way, you can still get updates from your projects and channels while appearing offline.
To wrap things up
In Slack, workspace members have the freedom to set their availability on the app manually. Anyone can set themselves to “Away,” appearing as if they’re currently offline on the app.
With the help of this feature, you can focus and work quietly on your projects without needing to respond to messages immediately. As long as you don’t chat on the channels, no one would know that you’re active on the app.
