How To Add Someone To A Channel On Slack

Do you have a new workspace member that you want to add to one of your channels on Slack? Or did you forget to include someone when you created a new channel? Whichever the case, we’re here to help you. We’ll show you how to add more members to your channels in Slack with our quick guide below.

Slack divides your workspace into sections called channels where you can message, collaborate, and share files with other users. Each channel can address a different part of your project, work, or business, keeping everything organized for workspace members.

When you create a channel on Slack, you include members of your workspace immediately. However, there might be times when new people join you on your project, where you need them in different public and private conversations.

Thankfully, you can always manage channel members and add more people to the conversation. Check our guide below to learn how.

How to add a member to your Slack channel

If you want to add someone to a channel that they previously can’t access on Slack, you always have the option to do so. In this way, you can bring new members to some of your private channels that are off-limits to other users.

You can add more members to a channel whether you’re using Slack on your desktop or mobile device. Follow our step-by-step tutorials below, and we’ll teach you how to do it on their web, desktop, and mobile app.

On your computer:

  1. Launch the Slack desktop or visit their web app and sign in to your workspace.
  2. Open one of your channels where you want to add more people.
  3. Click the icon of members located in the upper-right corner of the conversation.

  4. Click “Add people.”

  5. Enter the names or email addresses of the members you want to add to the channel and click Done.

After adding someone to a channel, they can immediately send a message to the conversation to say hello to the other members. If you ever change your mind, you can open the list of members on your channel and remove people any time you want.

On your phone:

  1. Launch the Slack mobile app from your home screen or app drawer and sign in to your account.
  2. Open one of your workspaces and go to the channel where you want to add more people.
  3. Tap the Details icon on the top right corner of the screen.

  4. Tap “Add people.”

  5. Choose the members you want to add to the channel and tap Add on the top right to confirm your decision.

You can add up to a thousand members to a Slack channel at one time. As such, you can create a list containing the name or email address of people you want to include on your channel that you can copy and paste when you add members.

Please note that if the admins or owners choose to hide email addresses in member profiles, you can’t search for members using their email. You can only use their names to add them to a channel.

To wrap things up

Now that you know how to add more people to your conversations on Slack, you can go ahead and assign new workspace members to different public or private channels where you need them. In this way, they can immediately join you in collaborating with other users for your project, business, or work-related stuff.

To help new members adjust to their new workspace, admins and owners can assign default channels which they’ll immediately join once they create an account on your workspace.
