How To Add Or Remove A Category In Gmail

Do you want to sort your emails into different tabs in Gmail? If that’s the case, you can add more categories to your Inbox on the app. By sorting your emails, you can prevent different kinds of messages from cluttering your account. In this way, you can focus on your important emails before checking the others later.

Gmail

In Gmail, there are categories you can use to sort your emails. With the help of the Social, Primary, and Promotions tab, you can separate the messages you receive on the app instead of viewing them all in your Primary Inbox.

Unfortunately, Gmail doesn’t sync your Inbox categories between your web and mobile apps. As such, you need to configure your settings on each of your devices individually if you want to keep your emails organized on your computer and mobile device.

With that in mind, here’s our quick guide about adding and removing categories on Gmail.

How to hide or show a category on your Gmail Inbox

If you want to change what categories you want to display on Gmail, you can update your Inbox settings. In this way, you can hide the emails you don’t need to see and view the ones that are relevant to you.

You can add or remove a category tab in whether you’re using the Gmail web client on your computer or the mobile app. In our step-by-step tutorials below, we’ll show you how to do it from both.

On your computer:

  1. Using your preferred web browser, visit Gmail and sign in to your account.
  2. Click the gear icon on the top right side of the screen and select “See all settings” on the menu.

  3. Head to the Inbox tab.

  4. On the Categories section, choose which tabs to show or hide from your Inbox.

  5. After finalizing or customizing the other options available, scroll down to the end of the page and select “Save Changes.”

If you want to segregate the emails you receive, you can add all the tabs to your Inbox. In this way, you can organize and sort mails from the other categories.

On the other hand, unchecking all categories places all your emails in the Primary Inbox.

On an Android device:

  1. Open the Gmail mobile app and sign in to your account.
  2. Tap the three horizontal lines on the top left side of your screen and select Settings at the bottom of the menu.

  3. Choose the account you want to manage.

  4. Under the Inbox section, tap Inbox categories.

  5. Check or uncheck the categories you want to display on the menu.

To display all your emails in a single inbox, you’ll need to uncheck all the categories.

Please note that you can’t turn on Inbox categories if you have more than 250,000 emails. You can make sure that you don’t go over the limit by archiving or deleting old emails.

How to move an email to a new category

Although Gmail automatically sorts your mails by default, you have the option to move your messages to a different category. For those using the Gmail mobile app, open an email, click More (three horizontal dots), select Move to, and choose a category.

On your computer, drag the email you want to move and drop it on another tab. To move all future emails from the same sender, click Yes on the pop-up notification that appears at the bottom right part of your screen.

To wrap things up

Now that you know how to add or hide categories on Gmail, you can choose whether to sort your emails into different tabs or view them all in your Primary Inbox. If you prefer the latter, uncheck all Inbox categories on your Gmail web settings.
