How To Add Friends On Discord

Do you want to message another Discord user even if you don’t share a mutual server? Or do you want to check their status from time to time without checking the server’s members list? Either way, you can add them to your friends list on the app. Follow our guide below, and we’ll show you how to send friend requests on Discord from your phone or computer.

Tutorial

In Discord, you have the option to add people as your friends on the app. By doing so, you get to message them directly or check their status from your friends list.

Also, users can opt to block messages from server members that are not on their friends list on the app. As such, you must first add them as friends to slide into their DMs.

Although adding people to your friends list on the app is optional, doing so can help you reach out to users that you frequently message or contact on the app. With that in mind, here’s our quick guide about everything you need to know about adding friends on Discord.

How to add people to your friends list on Discord

By default, you need to share a mutual server with someone on Discord to message them directly. However, you can opt to add people to your friends list so that you can DM them anytime once they accept it.

You can add friends on Discord whether you’re using their app on your phone or computer. In our tutorials below, we’ll cover the steps in doing so on both devices.

On your computer:

  1. Open Discord (desktop or web app) and sign in to your account.
  2. Click the Home icon on the top-left corner and select Friends.

  3. Click the “Add Friend” button on the top of the app.

  4. Enter the person’s username and tag on the empty field and click “Send Friend Request.” Please note that the username is case sensitive so double-check your entry before hitting the request button.

After hitting the send button, you’ll either see a green or red message which indicates whether you successfully sent the friend request or not. If you receive a notification that it didn’t work, double-check the username and tag before hitting the send button again.

Aside from using the steps above to add a friend on Discord, you can also right-click on one of the users on the server member’s list and select “Add friend” from the menu. You can also check the user’s profile and hit the “Send Friend Request” button from there.

On your mobile device:

  1. Launch Discord from your home screen or app drawer and sign in to your account.
  2. Tap the three lines icon on the upper left corner and select the Friends icon on the bottom of the app.

  3. Tap the “Add friend” icon on the top right corner.

  4. Enter the username and tag of the user you want to add and hit the “Send Friend Request” button.

You’ll also receive an indication of when you successfully sent the request or not on the Discord mobile app. If it didn’t work, check for mistakes in the spelling, capitalization, and make sure that there’s no space between the username and tag before sending the friend request again.

Alternatively, you can visit someone’s profile on the Discord mobile app and hit the friend request button from there. Once the person accepts your request, you can send them messages from your friends list on the app.

To wrap it all up

Now that you know how to add friends on Discord, it’s time to fill up your friends list on the app. Generally, you can send a friend request to anyone as long as you know their username and tag. However, it also depends on their privacy settings, if they disabled friend requests or not.
