Each workspace you manage on Airtable has a couple of primary features. You can add a base to store all your data for a project, tables for specific projects, a record for items, and fields to add more content to your records.

But unlike other spreadsheets apps, columns (fields) on Airtable allows you to add links, checkboxes, attachments, and more information on a record. With these different types of fields, you can customize your table to suit whatever you need.

How to insert a field on Airtable

Fields in Airtable allows users to add more content on each record they have on their base. You can add checkboxes, attachments, a due date, and many more. You can even add fields that connect to other tables on your project.

On your computer:
  1. Open the Airtable desktop app or visit the browser client and sign-in to your account.
  2. Go to one of your workspaces and open one of your bases.
  3. Click one of your tables and select a view (grid type) on the left side of your screen.

  4. Right-click on one of the headers (fields) and select Insert left or right.

  5. Add the new field’s name and select its type. After filling up all the details, click Create Field.

Aside from inserting between existing columns, you can also scroll to the right and click the plus button to add a new field. To move your newly created column, click and hold on the header and drag it to its new location.

You can also add a new field by expanding a record from any view, scrolling down at the end of the window, and clicking “Add a field to this table.”

On Android:

As for Android users out there, the process of adding a new field can be tricky if you’re new to the app. To do so, you have to open one of your records and customize the fields. Here’s a step-by-step tutorial below.

  1. Launch Airtable from your app drawer and sign-in to your account.
  2. Open one of the bases on your workspace.

  3. Choose a table to edit and tap a record.

  4. Scroll down at the end of the page and tap “Customize fields.”

  5. At the bottom of your screen, tap “Add a new field.”

  6. Add a name, description, default value, and change the field type. Once you finalize your new field, tap Save at the top right corner of your screen.

Please note that even if you delete a record on Android, it won’t remove the column where it belongs. You have to delete each field manually if you want to remove some of them from your table.

How to delete a field on Airtable

If you’re using the Airtable desktop app or web browser app, you can delete a field from one of your grid views. All you have to do is right-click on a column header and select “Delete field” at the bottom of the drop-down menu.

For Android users out there, you can also delete fields from the Airtable mobile app. To do so, start by opening one of your records and tapping “Customize fields” at the bottom of the page. Select the column you want to remove and tap “Delete field” below the Options section.

Please remember that when you delete a field on Airtable, it also removes data on the records of a table. Aside from that, you can’t undo your decision once you confirm the deletion of the field.
