To use the chat feature on Zoom, you must first add people as your contacts within the app. Once someone is your contact in Zoom, you can start the conversation or invite them to group chats.

How to add a chat contact on Zoom

If you want to chat with people on Zoom, you can add them as contacts. Once the person accepts your invitation, you can initiate a conversation to share messages, images, and other files with the user.

You can add new contacts on the Zoom app whether you’re using their desktop or mobile app. Check our step-by-step tutorials below, and we’ll show you how to invite your friends as contacts.

On your phone:

  1. Open the Zoom mobile app and sign in to your account.
  2. Tap “Contacts” at the bottom of your screen.

  3. Tap the plus icon on the upper right corner of the Contacts page and select the “Invite a Zoom Contact” option from the menu.

  4. Enter the person’s email address on the empty field and click the “Add” button below.

After hitting the Add button, you’ll receive a confirmation that you invited the user as a contact on Zoom. Once the user accepts your invitation, you can start messaging the person on the app.

On your computer:

  1. Open the Zoom desktop app and sign in to your account.
  2. Head to the Contacts tab.

  3. Click the plus icon on the upper left side of the screen and select “Invite a Zoom Contact” from the menu.

  4. Enter the person’s email address on the pop-up window that appears on your screen and select the Invite button to confirm your decision.
