Do you want people to know the purpose of your channels on Slack? Do you want to explain the rules and instructions on how to use each of your channels? If so, you can add descriptions to each channel within your workspace. Check our quick guide below, and we’ll show you how to do so.
Tutorial
In Slack, members use channels to communicate with other people in their workspace. Each channel can have a different purpose for your project or work to make collaboration with other teammates easier.
As time passes by, you might add new members to your workspace to help you with your work. To make sure that they know the purpose of each channel they can access, you can add a description to guide them.
Here’s our guide about using descriptions on your Slack channels.
How to put a description on one of your Slack channels
If you want new members to know a channel’s purpose in your workspace, you can add a conversation description. In this way, you don’t need to overly discuss every channel whenever someone joins your workspace.
You can add channel descriptions whether you’re using the Slack app on your phone or computer. Follow our tutorials below to learn how.
On your computer:
- Open the Slack web or desktop app and sign in to your workspace.
- Head to the channel that you want to edit and tap its name on the header.
- Click the Edit option on the right side of the Description section on the conversation details window.
- Add the description that you want to display and select the Save option on the bottom right.
Members can click the channel’s name and check its details to see the description. If you want to post deadlines or important information instead, you can opt to add a topic as well.
On your phone:
- Launch the Slack app on your device and sign in to your workspace.
- Open the channel that you want to manage and select its name on the header.
- Tap the Edit option on the channel details page.
- Type the description you want for the current channel and tap Save on the top right to apply the changes.
That’s how you add descriptions to your channels on Slack. Leaving the description section blank is fine, but adding information about the channel can help new members of your workspace familiarize themselves with the channels they should use.
To wrap it all up
Now that you know how to add channel descriptions, you can tell new members the purpose of the different channels within your workspace. If you ever change your mind, you can leave the description section blank and hit the save option afterward.
