Slack – Getting Started

In order to use Slack, all that you’re going to need is a computer or an iOS or Android device, access to the Internet, and an active email address. These are some of the basic things that almost everyone has so you shouldn’t have any issues.
There are two ways to use Slack for your work. Either you can join an existing workplace that someone has created and invited you to. Or you can create your own workplace, join it, and invite others to join as well.
We’re going to take a look at both creating a new workplace as well as joining an existing one when you’ve been invited to do so.
Creating a New Slack Workspace
Slack provides you with an easy way to create new workplaces that you can join and later add other members as well. A new workplace can be created online from the Slack website once you’ve given it your email address. The following are the steps on how you go about doing it from a browser on your computer.
Step 1. Head over to the Slack Create website at the https://slack.com/create URL. Feel free to use any of the browsers on your computer to open the URL.
Step 2. Once you are there, you’ll be asked to enter an email address. This is going to be your account email address with Slack so make sure to use the one that you have access to and that you frequently check the inbox of. Click on Next after you’ve entered your email address.
Step 3. What Slack’s going to do is it’s going to send a six digit confirmation code to your email address. Access your email account, look for the email from Slack, and take a note of the code you see in the email.
Step 4. Get back to the Slack website where you were before. Enter in the code you noted down in the previous step to verify your email address with the service. There’s no submit button to click as Slack will automatically submit the code for you.
Step 5. The screen that follows will ask you to enter the name of your company. This is where you can enter the name of your workspace. Make sure to use a real name as this is what’s going to appear everywhere in Slack once the account is created.
Step 6. The following screen will ask you to enter the name of the project that your team is working on. The reason Slack asks you to provide this information is because it’ll create a channel based on the name of your project.
Step 7. You’ll then be given the option to invite people to join your new Slack workspace. There are various ways to invite people to join your team and the following is an explanation of those ways for you.
Invite by Email
If you want to immediately add members to your team, you can do so by entering the email addresses of your team in the provided input boxes and clicking on Add Teammates. Each of the invitees will get an email with a link that when clicked, will allow the user to create a Slack account if they don’t already have one, and join your workspace thereafter.
You can invite as many people as you want using this option as further input boxes can be added by clicking on the Add another option.
Invite by Link
If you don’t want to rush and invite members, you can ask Slack to give you a joining link. What this link does is it allows anyone who clicks the link to join your workspace. This link can be obtained by clicking on the Get an invite link to share option on your screen.
When you click on the option, the link to join your workspace will be automatically copied to your clipboard. You can paste it in a new browser tab to see it for yourself.
Skip Inviting Members
If you would wait and invite your members only when you have set all the things up in your workspace, you can skip the invitation process altogether by clicking on the skip for now option at the bottom of your screen.
Step 8. Your Slack workspace should now be fully set up and you’ll be able to access it by clicking on the See Your Channel in Slack button on your screen. It should’ve created your first Slack channel as well using the project name you provided earlier.

Joining an Existing Slack Workspace
If you’ve been invited by your company to join an existing workspace, you don’t need to go through any of the options described above. It’s because all of those options should be setup by your company and not you as a user.
A company can invite a member using multiple ways. Either they can send you an email with a link so you can quickly join the workspace or they can share a secret joining link with you that you can click on to join that particular workspace on Slack.
Either way, joining a workspace is a matter of a click. Here we show you how to join using both ways.
Join a Slack Workspace Using Email
If your company has invited you to join the workspace via email, you should have received an email from Slack. Access your inbox and open the email, find the button that says Join Now in the email, and click on it.
Since Slack already has your email address, you’ll only be asked to enter your full name and a password. The full name will appear in your Slack account and your password, well, is your password. You’ll use it to access your Slack account on the web and in the apps on your devices.
Once you’ve hit the Create Account button, you’ll be taken to your workspace on the Slack web interface. Here, you’ll find everything that your company has created. You’ll be able to access the channels, find other members in the team, send and receive messages from other members, and also send messages to yourself – if you love self-talking.
Join a Slack Workspace Using a Join Link
If you’ve been given a link to join the workspace, then all you need to do is click on the link so that it opens in a web browser on your computer. You’ll then be required to enter your full name and a password. The password you create will be used to authenticate yourself each time you want to use Slack in your browser or in apps.
Accessing Your Slack Workspace
Once you’ve joined either your own or your company’s workspace, you’ll likely be using it often to keep in touch with your team members. The next time you need to access a particular workspace, you’re going to need the URL for that Slack workspace.
Accessing a Slack Workspace on the Web
Slack assigns a unique URL to each workplace that is created on the platform. You can then open this URL in your browsers to access your channels and other stuff.
You’ll find the URL of your workspace at two places:
First, in the invitation email that you received from Slack. It should mention where the workspace exists on the web.
Second, if you still have the workspace open in your browser, you’ll find the URL in your address bar. Or you can view your browser’s web history to find the URL.
Once you’ve gotten the URL, you can add it as a bookmark to your browser. This way you’ll be able to open it with a single click in any of your web browsers.
Accessing a Slack Workspace in the Slack App
Slack has both Android and iOS apps available so you don’t necessarily need to use a browser to access your workspaces. You can add the workspace to the app on your device and then use it from your smartphone on the go.

If the newly created workspace is what you’re joining on your smartphone, you can simply fill-in your login details and you should be able to join it. However, if you’re already a member of a different workspace and you want to add a new workspace to the app, you’ll need to follow the following steps.
Step 1. Launch the Slack app on your Android or iOS based device.
Step 2. When the app launches, tap on your current workspace icon at the top-left corner of your screen. Then, tap on the four boxes icon at the top-right corner of the new menu and select the option that says Add workspaces.
Step 3. On the following screen, you’re going to see all the workspaces that you use your email address with but haven’t joined yet. Find the workspace you want to join and tap on the Sign in button next to it.
Step 4. You’ll need to log-in to your new workspace. You can do it by either requesting Slack to send you a magic link for logging-in to your account or typing in your Slack password.
Step 5. If you’ve chosen the “type password” option, enter in the password for your account and tap on the Next button to continue.
The workspace will be added to the app on your device. You can also switch between various workspaces using the same app on your iOS and Android devices.
Get Help Finding Workspaces
Eventually as you join more and more workplaces, keeping track of each workspace’s link will become tricky. Fortunately, Slack provides you with an easy way to access all the workspaces that use your email address.
Head over to the Slack Get Started webpage at https://slack.com/get-started and you’ll find all the workspaces that use your email address. When you find the one you want to access in the list, click on the Launch button next to it and it’ll open in your browser.
