Gmail: Setting Up An Automatic Email Forwarding

Oftentimes, having multiple email accounts is a thing, especially if you have different accounts for personal use and work purposes. With that, it’s quite a hassle to constantly change into your other account to check if you received a new email.

Nonetheless, thanks to Gmail because it allows you to set up an automatic email forwarding to your other email address. This will lessen the chance of not viewing emails on time just because you are logged into your other account.

To be able to do this, simply follow the steps that are listed below. Note that you may only set this up using your personal computer. This will not be done through the Gmail application or simply by phone.

1. Open Gmail using your web browser.

To begin, open your web browser and navigate your way to the Gmail website. Make sure to log into the account from which you want to forward the emails.

2. Click the Settings icon at the upper-right corner of your window.

After making sure that you’re logged into the account you want to forward emails from, look for the Settings icon (the one represented by a gear symbol) and click on it. You may be able to find this at the upper-right corner of your window.

3. Select “See all settings” under Quick settings.

Upon clicking the Settings icon, a pop-up side panel will appear. From there, click on “See all settings,” which you may be able to find right under the Quick settings category. You will then be redirected to another window after doing this.

4. Click on the “Forwarding and POP/IMAP” tab.

The Settings window that you’ll be redirected to will have several tabs, namely General, Labels, Inbox, Accounts and Import, Filters and blocked addresses, Forwarding and POP/IMAP, Add-ons, Chat and Meet, Advanced, Offline, and Themes. Among all those, click on the “Forwarding and POP/IMAP” tab.

5. Add a forwarding email address.

Under the Forwarding section, click on “Add a forwarding address” to add the email address to which you want the emails to be forwarded. From there, a pop-up window will appear. Input your forwarding address inside the box provided.

6. Click on “Next.”

After entering your forwarding email address, click on “Next” at the bottom-right of the window.

7. Click on “Proceed.”

Clicking “Next” will redirect you to another pop-up window, where two options will be provided: Proceed and Cancel. This is a confirmation window, asking you if you want to proceed with forwarding emails to the email address that you’ve inputted. Make sure to check if you’ve entered the correct email address. If you’re certain, click on “Proceed.”

8. Click “OK.”

After clicking “Proceed,” another dialogue box will then appear. This will inform you that a confirmation code has already been sent to the forwarding email address that you’ve entered. Click the “OK” button.

9. Verify your forwarding address.

Since a confirmation email has been sent to your forwarding address, you have to open that using the said email address. You may opt to click on the link that’s included in the email to verify your forwarding address, or you may copy the confirmation code that’s been given and paste it in the box provided back in the Settings window. If you want to use the code, ensure that you’ve copied and pasted the entire code given, then click on “Verify” after. Either way, you’ll have your forwarding address verified.

10. Click on “Forward a copy of incoming mail to” in the Forwarding section.

After verifying your forwarding address, go back to the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab of the Settings window and locate the “Forwarding” section. Under that section, click on “Forward a copy of incoming mail to” to forward future emails to your chosen forwarding address.

11. Choose what will happen to the emails that will be forwarded.

In the second dropdown box under the Forwarding section, you’ll see several options as to what will happen to the emails that will be forwarded. Those options include “keep Gmail’s copy in the Inbox,” “mark Gmail’s copy as read,” “archive Gmail’s copy,” and “delete Gmail’s copy.” You may choose whichever option you prefer the most, but it’s best to select the first option if you need a backup copy.

12. Click “Save Changes” at the bottom of the window.

Once done with all the steps, apply the changes you’ve made by clicking the “Save Changes” button at the bottom of the window.
