Gmail: Sending An Email To A Group

Almost everyone with internet access uses Gmail to communicate with others, especially in formal matters like academics and work.


When dealing with a professor, colleague, schoolmate, or anyone else of a similar nature, people do not usually send an email to a single person but rather to a group of people. You can send an email to a group to avoid wasting time sending specific content to many people and manually typing their email addresses. This will not only improve your efficiency but will also reduce your workload.

In this article, you will learn how to send an email to a contact group and guide you to send an email to specific contacts included in a contact group in your Gmail account. Follow the steps outlined below.

1. Go to Gmail.

First, you must open your web browser then navigate to Gmail. Make sure that the correct Gmail account is logged in.

2. Click the “Compose” button.

On the inbox homepage, you will see the “Compose” button on the upper-left side, which you must click. This will open a pop-up window on the bottom right of the page to input the receivers’ information and the message itself.

3. Type the group name in the “To” field.

Instead of manually typing the recipients’ email addresses in the new window, you can simply input the group name in the “To” field.

If you have a group in your contacts for the people you usually send an email to but come when you should exclude some of them, here is the best method for you to follow.

1. Compose an email then select either “To,” “Cc,” or “Bcc.”

The first thing you need to do is click the “Compose” button or the plus icon on the top left side of the Gmail screen. Doing so will allow a “New message” window to appear on your page. In this new window, you must select either of the three labels, “To,” “Cc,” and “Bcc.” Clicking any of these three will allow a pop-up window to appear.

2. Click the “My Contacts” tab then choose the group name.

In the new pop-up window, click the “My Contacts” tab, then select from the drop-down menu which group you need to send an email to. Afterward, this will allow all the contacts in that group to be listed on your screen.

3. Tap the box next the name of the contacts you want to include.

Seeing all the contacts included in the selected group, you now need to mark the boxes beside the names of those people you want to receive the email you are about to send.

4. Select “Insert” to save the changes made.

After ensuring that you’ve selected the correct names, all left for you to do is click the “Insert” button on the lower right corner of the window.


Aside from sending an email to a group or specific people within a contact group, it is also possible to move a contact from one field to another without having to retype their email address. Simply hold and drag their name or email address from the original field to the new one to accomplish this. This feature could be helpful if you don’t want a specific person to be the primary recipient of your email because it allows you to move their name from the “To” field to either “Cc” or “Bcc.”
